Marriage Services in Bali: Legal Wedding Requirements for Foreigners
Foreigners can legally marry in Bali through either a civil ceremony at the Civil Registry Office (Catatan Sipil) or a religious ceremony followed by civil registration. Requirements include a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from your embassy, translated birth certificates, passport copies, and witness identification. The process takes 2-4 weeks including document preparation. Bali Immigration handles all legal documentation, translation, and registration for international marriages in Bali.
Getting Legally Married in Bali
Bali has become one of the world top wedding destinations, with thousands of international couples choosing the Island of the Gods for their ceremony each year. However, there is an important distinction between a destination wedding celebration and a legally binding marriage in Indonesia. Many couples have beautiful wedding ceremonies in Bali that are not legally recognized because they did not complete the proper civil registration process.
For your marriage to be legally recognized in Indonesia and by most foreign governments, you must complete the civil registration process at the Catatan Sipil (Civil Registry Office) in Denpasar. This requires specific documentation that must be prepared in advance. Our marriage services team handles the entire legal process, allowing you to focus on enjoying your special day while we ensure everything is properly documented and registered.
Types of Marriage Ceremonies in Bali
Civil Marriage
Performed at the Catatan Sipil office in Denpasar. Legally binding immediately upon registration. No religious requirement. Ideal for interfaith couples or those wanting a simple legal ceremony. Can be combined with a separate celebration ceremony.
Religious Marriage + Civil Registration
Ceremony performed by an authorized religious leader followed by civil registration. Available for Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and Confucian ceremonies. The religious certificate must be registered at Catatan Sipil within 60 days to be legally valid.
Symbolic/Blessing Ceremony
A non-legal celebration ceremony popular at Bali wedding venues. Beautiful for the experience but NOT legally binding. Must be combined with civil registration if you want legal recognition. Popular options include Balinese Hindu blessing, beachfront ceremony, and cliff-top ceremony.
Document Requirements
For Foreign Nationals
Each foreign national planning to marry in Bali must provide: valid passport with at least 12 months validity, Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) or Certificate of Freedom to Marry from your embassy or home country government. This document confirms you are legally free to marry. Processing time varies by country — Australian embassy requires 5 working days, UK embassy requires 7 days, US embassy issues an affidavit instead of CNI. You also need a certified birth certificate with apostille or legalization, divorce decree (if previously married) with apostille, death certificate of former spouse (if widowed) with apostille, and passport-sized photographs (4×6, white background, 4 copies).
All Documents Must Be
Translated into Bahasa Indonesia by a certified sworn translator (we provide this service), legalized or apostilled by the issuing country, and verified by the Indonesian embassy in your home country OR apostilled under the Hague Convention. The document preparation process typically takes 2-3 weeks, which is why we recommend starting at least one month before your planned ceremony date.

Embassy CNI Process by Country
Australian citizens: Schedule an appointment at the Australian Consulate in Bali (Renon, Denpasar). Bring passport, completed Notice of Intended Marriage form (signed by your celebrant in Bali at least one month before the wedding), and the fee of AUD 170. Processing takes 5 working days. British citizens: Contact the British Honorary Consulate in Bali for guidance. The CNI process has been updated — you may need to obtain it from the UK before traveling. US citizens: The US Embassy does not issue CNIs. Instead, they provide an Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry, which is accepted by Indonesian authorities. Cost is approximately USD 50.
Marriage Between Different Nationalities
Indonesia recognizes marriages between citizens of different countries, but the documentation requirements become more complex. Each spouse must provide documentation from their respective country, and all documents must be cross-verified. For marriages between an Indonesian citizen and a foreigner, additional requirements apply including a prenuptial agreement (highly recommended to protect property rights) and reporting to the local immigration office within 30 days of marriage (this can affect the foreign spouse visa status and may provide a pathway to a Spouse KITAS).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Bali wedding legally recognized in my home country?
A properly registered Indonesian marriage is generally recognized worldwide under international private law principles. However, you should register your Indonesian marriage certificate with your home country embassy or civil registry upon return. We provide the apostilled marriage certificate that your home country requires for registration.
Can same-sex couples legally marry in Bali?
Unfortunately, Indonesia does not currently recognize same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples can have symbolic/blessing ceremonies at many Bali venues, but these will not be legally registered. We recommend consulting with a legal advisor in your home country about alternative options for legal recognition.
How much does a legal marriage in Bali cost?
Government fees at Catatan Sipil are approximately IDR 250,000. Embassy CNI fees vary by country (AUD 170 for Australia, USD 50 for US). Document translation costs approximately IDR 2,000,000-3,000,000. Our full marriage documentation service, including all translations, submissions, and accompaniment, is priced competitively — contact us for a detailed quote based on your specific situation.
Can we have a legal ceremony at our resort or villa?
The civil ceremony must be performed at the Catatan Sipil office. However, you can have a religious ceremony at any venue with an authorized religious leader, then register it at Catatan Sipil afterward. Many couples have a simple civil ceremony first, then a grand celebration at their chosen venue.
