Indonesia Entry Requirements: Everything You Need Before Traveling to Bali
To enter Indonesia (Bali), you need: a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival date, a return or onward flight ticket, proof of accommodation, a completed customs declaration (e-CD via the Indonesian Customs app), and either a Visa on Arrival (VOA) payment of IDR 500,000 or a pre-approved visa. Some nationalities qualify for visa-free entry (30 days). The Indonesia tourist levy of IDR 150,000 is mandatory for all foreign visitors to Bali since February 2024. Health insurance is recommended but not mandatory for VOA holders.
Before You Fly: Complete Entry Checklist
Arriving in Bali should be exciting, not stressful. Yet every day, travelers face delays, denied boarding, or immigration complications because they were not aware of Indonesia entry requirements. This comprehensive guide covers absolutely everything you need to prepare before your flight, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Indonesian entry requirements have undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly following the pandemic and with the introduction of new visa categories and digital systems. What applied on your last visit may no longer be current. This guide reflects the most up-to-date requirements and is regularly reviewed to ensure accuracy. However, immigration regulations can change rapidly — we recommend confirming with us via WhatsApp if you are traveling within the next 30 days.
Passport Requirements
Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from your date of arrival in Indonesia. This is strictly enforced — airlines will deny boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity, and Indonesian immigration will refuse entry. Your passport must also have at least 2 blank pages for the entry stamp and any visa stamps. If your passport is damaged, has water stains, or has a torn cover, consider getting a replacement before travel, as immigration officers may refuse entry on a damaged passport.
Visa Requirements
Visa-Free Entry (30 Days)
Citizens of certain countries can enter Indonesia without a visa for stays up to 30 days. This includes ASEAN member states and select other countries. Visa-free entry cannot be extended — if you need more than 30 days, you must obtain a VOA instead, even if eligible for visa-free entry. Visa-free entry is only for tourism purposes.
Visa on Arrival (VOA)
Citizens of 90+ countries can obtain a VOA at Ngurah Rai Airport. The cost is IDR 500,000 (approximately USD 32), payable by credit card, debit card, or Indonesian rupiah cash. The VOA grants 30 days and can be extended once for an additional 30 days. To save time, consider applying for an eVOA online before departure — same cost, but you skip the VOA payment queue at the airport.
Pre-Approved Visas
For longer stays or specific purposes (work, study, retirement), you must obtain a visa before arrival. This includes the B211A Social Visa, KITAS sponsorship letter (telex/VTT), and certain business visas. These require advance application through an Indonesian embassy/consulate or through an authorized visa agent in Indonesia.

Chat on WhatsAppDigital Customs Declaration (e-CD)
Since 2023, Indonesia has implemented a digital customs declaration system. All arriving passengers must complete the electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) before or upon arrival. You can complete this through the Indonesian Customs mobile app (available on iOS and Android) or through the web portal. The e-CD requires: personal information and passport details, flight information, accommodation address in Bali, declaration of goods carried (items exceeding personal use allowances), and currency declaration if carrying more than IDR 100,000,000 or equivalent in foreign currency. We recommend completing the e-CD 24-48 hours before your flight to avoid delays at the airport.
Bali Tourist Levy
Since February 14, 2024, all foreign visitors to Bali must pay a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately USD 10). This one-time payment is valid for your entire stay and can be paid online through the Love Bali app or website before arrival, or at designated counters at Ngurah Rai Airport. The levy funds Bali cultural preservation, environmental protection, and tourism infrastructure. Keep your payment receipt — while enforcement is still being implemented, you may be asked to present it at immigration or during spot checks.
Health and Vaccination Requirements
As of the current regulations, there are no mandatory vaccinations required for entry to Indonesia from most countries. However, the following are strongly recommended: routine vaccinations (measles, tetanus, hepatitis A and B), typhoid vaccination (especially if eating street food), rabies pre-exposure vaccination (Bali has a significant stray dog population), and Japanese Encephalitis vaccination (for extended rural stays). If arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Malaria prophylaxis is generally not needed for Bali but is recommended for travel to eastern Indonesia.
What to Prepare Before Your Flight
Here is your complete pre-departure checklist: passport with 6+ months validity and 2+ blank pages, visa (eVOA applied online, or appropriate pre-approved visa), return or onward flight ticket (immigration may ask for proof), accommodation booking confirmation, completed e-CD (customs declaration via app or web portal), Bali tourist levy payment (IDR 150,000 via Love Bali app), travel insurance documentation (recommended, required for some visa types), printed or digital copies of all documents (keep originals separate from copies), Indonesian rupiah for initial expenses (ATMs available at airport, but having cash for VOA if paying in rupiah is convenient), and a working SIM card or international roaming plan for app-based declarations and communications upon arrival.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a return ticket to enter Bali?
Technically, yes. Indonesian immigration can ask for proof of onward travel. Airlines are more likely to check this before boarding. If you do not have a return ticket, a refundable onward ticket or a ticket to a neighboring country satisfies this requirement.
Can I pay for the VOA with a credit card?
Yes, VOA payment at Ngurah Rai Airport accepts Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards, as well as Indonesian rupiah cash. The eVOA (applied online before departure) accepts credit card payment only.
How much cash can I bring into Indonesia?
You can bring up to IDR 100,000,000 (approximately USD 6,500) or equivalent in foreign currency without declaration. Amounts exceeding this must be declared on the e-CD customs form. Failure to declare can result in confiscation of undeclared amounts.
Is travel insurance mandatory for Bali?
Travel insurance is not mandatory for VOA or visa-free entry, but it is highly recommended. It is mandatory for certain visa types including the B211A Social Visa and Digital Nomad Visa. Regardless of requirements, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for all visitors.
What items are prohibited from bringing into Indonesia?
Prohibited items include: narcotics and illegal drugs (penalties include death sentence), firearms and ammunition, pornographic material, fresh fruits and plants (without quarantine permit), and certain traditional medicines. Restricted items requiring declaration include: electronics exceeding personal use quantities, alcohol (max 1 liter per person), cigarettes (max 200 per person), and commercial goods.
